For years, Republicans south of the border and their Tory counterparts to the north have considered increasing the size of the military and decreasing federal spending to be their highest priorities.
As Grover Nordquist once commented, the goal of conservatives is to 'shrink government down to a size where it can be drowned in a bathtub'. According to their line of reasoning, 'the government that governs best in the government that governs least'. That sounds great until you modify it somewhat to fit a particular context--
the government that repairs bridges best is the government that repairs bridges the least'--for example.
The bridge collapse in Minnepolis yesterday illustrates the extent to which the conservative philosophy works against the public good.
But don't take my word for it...

In the name of fiscal conservatism, the experts are often ignored as shortsighted politicians rush to dole out tax cuts.
