Excellence in Journalism

Having lived in Nigeria, I was excited when I saw this Headline...

Obama Visits Notorious Slum in Nigeria

When I read the article, however, it soon became clear that Senator Obama is on the other side of the continent, in Nairobi, Kenya.

Given the geographically-challenged headline, the third paragraph of the AP article is pretty ironic:

Senator Obama proclaims the following:

"I love all of you, my brothers _ all of you, my sisters" Obama told a crowd in Kibera. "I want to make sure everybody in American knows Kibera. That's why we have all the news crews."

Read It:

If I were the mayor of a small, impoverished village on the Mambila plateau in Southeastern Nigeria, I would immediately rename my town Kibera.

Welcome To Montreal!

So there we were, Laurie, Sophie, and I, on the escalator up from the tracks to the main floor of the Montreal train station.

An elderly man in a via rail vest spies us ascending from the top of the stairs, and squats like a catcher above us.

Pointing at Sophie, he says in a heavily accented stentorian bellow:

"Oh! She is a real beauty, that one! A masterpiece! Well done, eh!"

His smile and thumbs up gesture will be the cornerstone upon which I build my memories of this first vacation with our daughter.

My take: Montreal is a beautiful city! A masterpiece! Well done, eh!

Scarface Bear

Mali, our well-behaved Ridgeback, never touches Sophie's toys.

Because of this, it was quite a shock to find Sophie's favourite stuffed animal practically decapitated on our basement floor last week.

With great sadness, I gathered up the remains of Sophie's first plush friend and prepared to give it a glad bag sendoff.

Fortunately for Sophie, Grandma had other ideas.
She took it home and sewed it back together.

For Sophie's sake, I'm glad the bear is back, but I have to confess that I find Scarface Bear a bit disconcerting.

Maybe It's the Comedy Channel's Puppets Who Kill, The Colbert Report, or those godawful Chucky Movies, but a teddybear resurrection seems a tad creepy.
